How to Connect Rooms With Color

June 06, 2019 3 min read

Learn to connect your rooms with Benjamin Moore paint colors at any JC Licht locations

Does the color scheme of your home flow smoothly from room to room?
If not, you might be missing out on a harmonious design element.

Linking rooms with color may not seem all that important if your rooms can be separated by closing doors but if you can see from one room to another, the color relationship between those rooms affects whether the space feels balanced or choppy.

Using unrelated colors in neighboring rooms can make your home feel disjointed, while using colors that coordinate to each other creates an attractive flow.

Here are four ways to connect your rooms with color:

Create Flow

In open floor plan houses, it’s even more imperative to select colors that correlate to each other.

The goal is to give each room or space its own character while still achieving a sense of unity. Or keep it simple by choosing a consistent paint color on the walls of connecting spaces.

(Trim and ceiling color): Ballet White OC-9 Regal® Select, Semi-Gloss.
(Ceiling): Waterborne Ceiling Paint, Ulta Flat Finish

Select a Color Theme

Choose a single color as a theme to run throughout your home. This one color will be a unifying link that runs from room to room.

This unifying element is often the woodwork: window and door frames, baseboards and moldings. If you’d a more subtle connection, use recurring colors in fabrics or accessories.

Color Crosslinking

Just because you have an open floor plan doesn’t mean you have to paint every room the same color.

Give each space it’s own personality while maintaining a unified look by choosing 2-3 colors that go well together and use them in fluctuating amounts from room to room.

(Chair): Million Dollar Red 2003-10, ADVANCE®, High Gloss.

Tie in the Floors

If you choose to paint adjoining rooms with vastly contrasting colors, create cohesiveness by using flooring or area rugs that contain both colors. The rugs and walls don’t have to match exactly, the eye will still see them as closely related if one is slightly darker or lighter than the other.

Connect with White Trim

A no fail way to unify your space from room to room is to paint all the trim throughout the house the same color of white. Pick your wall colors first then choose a white that works well with them. White trim will connect your rooms and make you feel anchored as you move throughout your home.

Color preferences vary as much as personalities. Some people like to be surrounded by comfortable neutrals, while others love bright and bold colors.

The good news is that when it comes to color, there really is no “correct” choice. But if you’re looking for some help to make sure your home colors flow and connect, schedule an in-home color consultation with a JC Licht color expert.
